Laptop Keyboard Repair Tips and Tricks

If you try to repair a laptop keyboard it can be easy or complex.  Laptop keyboard repair is one of the more common repairs handled at our shops. Customers come to us with a variety of problems ranging from spills, to broken or melted keys or debris stuck behind the keys. Here are a few helpful tips you can use to decide if you need laptop keyboard repair.

If you spill water on your keyboard, there is a good chance you won’t need keyboard replacement.  But if you spill soda or any other liquid that contains sugar, you may need to replace the keyboard. What ever you do if you spill something into your keyboard, do not use a hot hairdryer to dry it out. This is usually how those melted keys happen.

For water spills, the first thing you want to do is shut off your computer, if it isn’t already, to make sure you don’t short it out. Do not turn it back on again until you are absolutely certain it has dried out. Start by tipping your keyboard upside down over a towel. Do not shake the computer as this may cause the water to go into other areas. After you feel the water has drained out, turn it back over and use a hairdryer set at “cool” to further dry it out. Do not power on your computer for several days giving it a chance to completely dry out.

If you are brave, you can attempt to remove the keyboard yourself so you can better get inside to dry it. Unfortunately, every computer model is a little different; some have keyboards that are easy to remove and others not. If you happen to own a Compaq Presario, replacing the keyboard is fairly simple. What if you’ve broken off some keys? This can be a difficult fix because the keys sit on delicate mounting arms held in place with fragile clips that are easily broken. Replacing keys can be a repair that takes a lot of patience. If you want to attempt to replace keys yourself, you might consider finding an old laptop or keyboard of your same model. You can then practice on this one and use it for spare parts.  If this fails, you’re probably looking at professional laptop keyboard repair.

Got dust and debris between or behind your keys? Start by shutting down and unplugging your laptop and removing the battery. Turn your laptop over with the cover open and very gently tap on the bottom of the case. This will loosen any particles (food, staples, etc..) that may have fallen between the keys. Next turn the laptop upright again and spray the keys with a can of compressed air. Blow air between the keys being careful to not get too close to the keys. Don’t shake the can or you’ll get a heavy wet spray instead of air. Next spray a non-conductive electronics cleaner onto a lint-free cloth and wipe the keys. Do not spray the cleaner directly into the keyboard or use paper towels. Make sure that you use a lint-free cloth such as microfiber and carefully wipe it across the surface of the keys.
